A Child's Place Daycare Centre

History

A Child's Place Daycare Centre logo

A Child’s Place Daycare Centre was opened in 1976 as a private daycare in space rented from the Anglican Church of St. Jude on Howarth Avenue in Scarborough.

In 1982, the Church took over the operation of the daycare and decided to run it as an outreach project.

Representatives of the Church met with Ministry of Community and Social Services staff and operation of the daycare was transferred to The Church of St. Jude. Afterwards, the Church created a Board of Management, consisting of parent and Church volunteers, to oversee the operation of the Centre.

Since that time, A Child’s Place has operated as a non-denominational, not-for-profit centre by the Church. St. Jude’s continues to maintain the Centre as an outward and visible sign of its contribution to the community at large.

The Centre has five classrooms, a kitchen, laundry facilities, a staff lounge/storage room, an indoor play area, an outside playground, and a supervisor’s office.

Mission

A Child’s Place Daycare Centre commits to providing the highest quality of early childhood education and care for the children entrusted to it.

Philosophy

We operate the Centre according to the following principles:

  • We believe that each child is unique and thus has the right to experience activities that will ensure his/her full potential is challenged and developed.

  • We provide a warm, loving and secure environment staffed with trained childcare professionals that encourages each child’s development of a positive self-concept, positive socialization skills, self-help skills, and a feeling of trust in other human beings.

  • We provide an environment that encourages sound health, safety and nutritional practices.

  • We provide the age appropriate educational program and a variety of developmentally appropriate activities and materials that are selected to emphasize concrete experimental learning in the areas of reasoning, language, visual perception, and fine motor and gross motor skills.

  • We provide open communication with parents regarding their child’s daily activities, individual needs, and developmental progress.

  • We will perform developmental screenings to identify special developmental needs of individual children and make referrals for special services when appropriate.

  • We encourage creative expression and an appreciation for the arts.

  • We respect cultural diversity of children, parents and staff.
