The 200 year-old cemetery at St. Jude's is still used for burials, and many parishioners
own plots there. The Cemetery Board oversees cemetery policies, the care and
maintenance of the cemetery and the selling of burial plots. The board meets as
needed (3 or 4 times a year).

The Rites of the Dead
You may have noticed ads in the newspapers sponsored by some of the larger Toronto
cemeteries. As Rector, I find these ads very offensive, as they encourage us to
enjoy one-stop shopping at their cemetery. Yes, you can have your
funeral, your burial and reception all in the same place, making your life easier.
Though they may couch their ads in words that may make it seem convenient to us, I would
like to remind you that they are solely in the business of making money. It is the
right of Christian people to have their funerals take place in their parish church where
they have worshipped and been nourished by the sacraments and the Word of God. Many
things happen at funerals: we grieve, we remember and we celebrate life. Yes,
it may be easier to do it all in one place, but remember that parishioners at St. Jude's
are offered space to have the reception at our church, and the service should be conducted
there.
We have plenty of full sized graves and cremation plots here, and if you check around,
the costs of graves and burials here is far below the costs of the large Toronto
cemeteries. We also offer space (if available) for a reception after the service.
Our parish offers these services free of charge to parishioners. That is
where some of the bigger places make their money. Think about these things. I
am always available to discuss these matters with you.
Reverend Canon Ian Noseworthy
Note:
Fr. Ian retired from our parish in 2009, but his sentiments are shared by
our Priest-In-Charge Rev. Harold Nahabedian.
